European PS3 Specs

Sony have announced the official specifications of the Playstation 3 for Europe, which (apparently) differ from the existing US/Japan specs.

‘The European PS3 will feature the Cell Broadband Engine™, 60 GB hard disc drive, Blu-ray Disc player, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, SIXAXIS™ wireless controller. It also embodies a new combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation® (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation®2 (PS2) titles.’

The main difference here is the software. Most of it will be an amalgamation of firmware updates, but there seems to be the suggestion that backwards compatibility with PS2 games will be restricted in the European PS3. For the UK, it’s £425 on March 27th.

Sony delivers a stunning blow…

In a clash of the titans Blu-ray and HD DVD are fighting for the illustrious crown of DVDs next generation format, a war which will be won or lost on the high streets.

But if Sony are to be believed the war never really got started and nor is likely to based on some very solid numbers from the month January.

The figures from the Sony camp show that sale of Blu-ray discs are outstripping HD DVD discs by two to one. Interestingly though HD DVD players are actually marginally out selling their Blu-ray counterparts, although the Sony camp isn’t likely to be worried with the planned European launch of the PS3.
