PS3: 300,000 Units for UK Launch

Since Sony’s announcement that the long and eagerly anticipated PS3 is launching here in the UK on the 23rdMarch, the guys over at ThreeSpeech (semi-official PS3 blog) have been quick to do a little number crunching.

Based on how much of the UK accounts for European business they have confidently predicted that at the word “go” UK retailers will have around 300,000 units. In comparison using the same math this figure should equate to more than the combined number of Wii and 360 consoles that were initially shipped.

If you want to get your hands on one you will have to get that pre-order in sooner rather than later. What has yet to be confirmed is whether Sony is going to do the allocation as was the case with PS2 (i.e. you only get one if you have your official letter from Sony). PS3 Price Cut… in 2009

Saving up for one of the most anticipated purchases of the year, but thinking you might leave it a few months for a price drop? Don’t bother – Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Chief Financial Officer, has declared that the PS3′s price would not be reduced for at least 2 or 3 years.

This is probably because SCE was the only division of Sony to lose money in the last Quarter’s financial results. They already had to lower the price in Japan due to poor consumer feedback, and sales of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld console dropped by 72% over the past year.

Looks like we’ll just have to shell out the £425 anyway. See you on March 23rd. Read more

PS3 Final Details

23rd of March 2007 is the date gamers across the UK and Europe have been waiting for. Sony has today confirmed the 23rd as the official launch of the Playstation 3. This is the last in the trio of next generation consoles, gamers have been waiting for, following on from the Xbox 360 launched in November 2005 and the Nintendo Wii in November 2006.

The Playstation 3 has been available since early November over in the US and Japan but Sony saw fit to make European gamers wait just a little long “” due mainly to a problem with the manufacturing of lasers for the Blue Ray disc drives.

Due to demand from both Retailers and Consumers only the 60GB (WiFi ready) console will available at a cost of £429 “” this move was likely influenced by Microsoft”s launch of the Xbox 360 who launched with both their Premium (Incl. of Hard-drive) and Core packs which led to an unexpected demand for peripherals which they struggled to cope with. Later on in the year depending on demand we can expect to see a 20GB version on the shelves. Read more

No Price Cuts for Xbox 360 Either

Following suit from Sony’s decision that the PS3 would keep its price tag for a while to come, Microsoft has dismissed claims that the Xbox 360 is going to undergo a price cut in the near future. It was widely expected that Microsoft would bring the price of their latest gaming console down to even further undercut its newest competitor in the PS3.

“There are no plans [for a cut]. We”re offering outstanding value and choice “” especially when you compare us to our soon-to-be competitor,”

- Chris Lewis
Regional VP of Microsoft EMEA Home+Ents

Although the Xbox 360 is already £200 cheaper than the PS3, Microsoft has been forced to lower its sales estimates from 13/15 million units by June down to ‘just’ 12 million. At these kinds of differences, is a £20 discount really going to change things?

This news comes on the same day as Sony declare they are only shipping 220,000 PS3s to the UK – that is 30,000 less than their previous lowest estimate. Their excuse is that the UK market is about 22% of the 1 million PAL units they will sell. £425 on March 23rd. Read more

PS3: March 23rd

Advertising agency TBWA has indicated that Sony will likely release the PS3 in Europe on March 23rd. The company, who deal with advertising for large global brands such as the Playstation, Apple and Adidas said that advertising for the PS3 would start towards the end of March, backing up suggestions from other senior retail sources.

Speaking to GI.biz, a spokesperson for advertising agency TBWA said the marketing campaign for the console ‘launches towards the end of March’ – which would suggest that an early March date is unlikely. Therefore if Sony are to believed about their March launch date the 23rd would make a suitable candidate.

A source speaking to gamesindustry.biz said that Sony would make the official announcement within the next fortnight.

Sony delivers a stunning blow…

In a clash of the titans Blu-ray and HD DVD are fighting for the illustrious crown of DVDs next generation format, a war which will be won or lost on the high streets.

But if Sony are to be believed the war never really got started and nor is likely to based on some very solid numbers from the month January.

The figures from the Sony camp show that sale of Blu-ray discs are outstripping HD DVD discs by two to one. Interestingly though HD DVD players are actually marginally out selling their Blu-ray counterparts, although the Sony camp isn”t likely to be worried with the planned European launch of the PS3. Review: Sony K550i

The good: 2.0 megapixel camera with Autofocus function, A2DP,

The bad: Grainy digital images, uses Memory Stick Micro

Shockgadgets verdict: Putting aside the disappointing performance of the camera this neat and attractive handset is very user-friendly – packed with features it’s pretty good value for money.

Full Review
Sony Ericsson launched a glut of new phones earlier in the year in an effort to appeal to a much broader audience – the result was the launch of two Cyber-shot-branded handsets – theK550i and K810i. We have the lower spec K550i to play with this time round and we are expecting a great deal from the camera totting phone even if it is the lower spec of the two…

Game Industry Predictions

The above is a graph showing past games sales and a prediction for the future. This graph predicts that Xbox 360 game sales will increase for a few years, with sales for the Wii and PS3 staying roughly the same. The Xbox 360 is predicted to do singificantly better than the other two consoles, with the PS3 behind the Wii. Around 2009, sales for all the consoles will decline.

At this time, we would expect a new generation of consoles to be born, or else we could be facing a complete crash in the gaming industry. It is a known fact that selling consoles lose a lot of money for the manufacturers (although not the Wii), and they make their money through selling accessories and licenced games. Even the games themselves don’t make profits for the developers, and piracy plays a big part in that.

Do you think Microsoft/Nintendo/Sony are going to keep making consoles, and that developers are going to keep coming up with new games? Or do you think that games as we know them are just not worth making anymore, and that there’s a risk that we could be without them in a few years?

Xbox 360 Elite

Just a couple of days before the PS3′s European Launch, the new black Xbox 360 ‘Elite’ has been unearthed. With a 120GB hard drive and HDMI output, this is not a ‘new’ console, but rather a third version to sell alongside the existing Core and Premium 360s. However, this will be a limited edition SKU.

The case, controller, and Live headset will all be black, along with new packaging. The Elites will run cooler (heat is a big problem amongst 360s), but there is no confirmation on new 65nm chips. To the disappointment of many fans, there are still no plans by Microsoft to integrate an HD DVD drive.

Also, the hardware made for the Elite will be available (in white) to upgrade your Core or Premium Xbox. However, when all the Elites are sold out, its components will become standard in the Core and Premium packages later this year, with no price change – although a decrease is expected when 65nm chips are implemented. Supposedly retailing for $479 (£244) in late April, Microsoft have not yet confirmed its existence.

Sony gets street-wise

So what did we learn this year at 3GSM? Well, we can of course expect a whole host of new music capable mobile phones, however what we haven’t seen has been much in the way of style and innovation when it comes the way we enjoy music.

Urban warriors around the country have been crying out for a wireless solution and Sony have obliged with the ultra light (186g) DR-BT50 Bluetooth wireless headphones, so no more tucking the cord under your shirt! They even neatly fold up so you can shove them in your coat pocket…

The new DR-BT50 headphones wirelessly connect to Stereo Bluetooth mobile phones or devices with A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) technology. The headphones also incoperate a built-in microphone enabling you take calls… Read more

European PS3 Specs

Sony have announced the official specifications of the Playstation 3 for Europe, which (apparently) differ from the existing US/Japan specs.

QUOTE
‘The European PS3 will feature the Cell Broadband Engine™, 60 GB hard disc drive, Blu-ray Disc player, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, SIXAXIS™ wireless controller. It also embodies a new combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation® (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation®2 (PS2) titles.’

The main difference here is the software. Most of it will be an amalgamation of firmware updates, but there seems to be the suggestion that backwards compatibility with PS2 games will be restricted in the European PS3. For the UK, it’s £425 on March 27th.
